Pennsylvania's governor on Monday called on the state Legislature to provide $2,000 in stimulus payments to some households to "escape inflation," even as critics said such programs contribute to price pressures.

Gov. Wolf, Pa. Democrats Try To Revive Plan For $2,000 Checks For Some Households

"I want to give Pennsylvanians the progress they need to avoid inflation and higher prices. So for every family making $2,000, $80,000 or less. We think about 250,000 families will apply," said Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf .

He said this is the second time Wolf has tried to issue a payment bill. Wolf argued that the Commonwealth could do this because of its $800 billion economy.

"So that's 500 million. "And we think the prices will be temporarily higher, but it will give families a place to stand."

Pennsylvania "can do it" because of its funding, he said at an event in Sharpsburg, local media reported. "A truly life-saving medicine for families can help them get non-government funding." We can help families stay in their homes," Wolf continued. "We can help families eat. Why the hell wouldn't we? Especially now that there's money in the bank again?”

Such a move could be a political trick before 2022. mid-term elections. Wolff and other Democrats will use the opportunity to pass a bill that would allow a $2,000 tax break for low-income earners to boost voter turnout.

"So I'm reaching out to the Republican leaders in the General Assembly. We are all calling on Republican leaders in the General Assembly to step up and send this bill to my desk,” Wolf said. "Promise me to sign soon. Let's put this money back in the pockets of Pennsylvanians. Let's help families get through this difficult time."

After the federal government provided billions of dollars in COVID-19 relief last year, other states began sending out stimulus checks and tax refunds. But some state lawmakers and officials said the stimulus checks were needed to ease residents amid rising inflation, with the consumer price index hitting 8.5 percent in July.

According to Christina Herrin of the nonprofit Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), state stimulus checks are "a futile attempt to fight inflation."

July 22 in a blog post, Herrin said there is "no evidence" to support the claim that artificially injecting money into the economy will stop inflation. He said the Biden administration's $1.9 trillion American Recovery Act, which included a third round of stimulus checks, was a "significant factor" in pushing inflation to four-decade highs.

"A lump-sum payment for inflation is very different from the tax refund that many states offer to all taxpayers based on income. It's the good bands that make things more expensive and keep inflation going longer than otherwise," Herrin said.
