With a barrel length of only 16.5” Thompson T1-14 models are 1.5” shorter than T1 models with 18” barrels. The BATFE recently approved a permanently attached Cutts compensator as part of the 16.5-inch barrel. The reinforced Cutts compensator offered on 18” tube models is not considered part of the tube.

M28a1 Thompson Submachine Gun (military Version) From Hessen Antique
Walnut and Vertical Forend / Fixed Stock and Horizontal Walnut Forend (T1DH, T110SH) / Detachable Stock and Vertical Forend (T1B) / Blackened Stock and Horizontal Forend (T1-C) A few weeks ago we published an article called Standard production G4S ” talks about emptying his gun. Despite its modern appearance, design elements of this rifle indicate that it is likely based on the Standard Manufacturing 1922, an enlarged semi-automatic version of the Thompson submachine gun. This sparked a discussion about Thompson SMG models in the comments section of that article, and one of our readers, Mike Johnson, posted the image posted above and commented:
I wanted a .22lr tommy gun so I made my own. Thompson or Standard Manufacturing should do it. 10/22 uses fire control and magazine
". This seemed really interesting and interesting to the writer and many TFB readers, so I asked Mike to share more details and pictures about the project and let me use the information to write an article about the Tommy gun. Mike kindly agreed, and today the hot is. we will see how he designed and built the gate.
It all started with a combination of parts that Mike had on hand that he thought would be perfect for use in his Thompson Submarine Gun prototype project. Specifically, I had an original stock Thompson SMG that I bought at a gun show a decade ago, and parts from a Ruger 10/22 (bolt, fire control group, various magazines) sitting in a spares box.

Deciding to use the aforementioned parts, Mike began designing the rest of his Tommy gun around it. Newly designed parts include upper and lower receivers, pistol grip and forend, trigger, muzzle device, rear guard and more. inputs Most of these parts are made from the same hard materials as the Haas Mini Mill. One exception is the rear guard, which is made by cutting a piece of square steel tubing. The rear view itself is Williams' eyes.
The 10/22 trigger mechanism parts and the new trigger are held together in the original 10/22 trigger guard assembly housing, but Mike cut off the original trigger guard because the working lower receiver has an integrated trigger guard. This modification created a small fire control group assembly from a 10/22 trigger guard assembly that was inserted into the lower receiver of Mike's Tommy gun.
A Cutts pattern compensator is bolted and welded to the barrel to provide the 16.1″ overall barrel length required by the rifle’s legal definition. The tommy gun with Cutts compensator is approximately 12 inches long. Usually, meeting the legal requirements for the barrel length of a model gun looks odd compared to the actual gun. As you can see, despite having a 4 inch long barrel, Mike's gun has no misalignment. How is it possible? The trick is to create a seamless optical illusion by having a longer forearm, thus matching the barrel to forearm length ratio of the original Thompson SMG. This is a great solution!
Mike's Tommy gun model looks really good with the drum magazine. As you can see in the photo above, the curved 10/22 magazine doesn't look good, since real Thompson submachine gun magazines are straight. It must be really hard to secure a high capacity .22LR magazine without that curvature due to the design of the curved cartridge. A fake real magazine attached to a 10 round 10/22 magazine can be the solution if you want a magazine that looks like a Thompson SMG box magazine.
Denix Wwii M1928 Thompson Replica Submachine Gun
This is a really cool project, isn't it? Although many borrowed parts are used, it is a very complex and advanced project that requires a lot of design and manufacturing skills to complete. Of course, it's not a 100% exact copy in all the little details, but it looks really good for a quantity of 10/22 parts. This gun should have some customization with 10/22 parts such as bolts and trigger components. I believe Mike's method of creating a replica pistol using such extensive use of Ruger 10/22 parts could be used to create replicas of many other historic firearms that are difficult to obtain due to rarity and prohibitive cost.
I think someone should buy the rights and start making this gun. All the research has already been done and it might just take a little tweaking to produce it. I mean, maybe it's a better weapon!? Let us know what you think a fair price would be for a gun like this in the comments section. What other weapon models can be made using 10/22 parts?
