"We were shopping and I was telling my friend how I lost my financial aid for college because of some family issues," said Collins, a Patriot Launching Station Enhanced Operator-Maintainer who recently left his assignment with a battery, 6th Battalion. 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, in South Korea. "The recruiter said he couldn't help but listen and told me there was a solution to my problem."
"I did it today," Collins joked. "I'm a private in the army, so all I do is wake up and wait for orders to follow. Life is good."
After completing basic combat and advanced personal training, Collins went to South Korea where life took a different turn for him.
He recounts a time when he and a group of fellow soldiers, known as battle buddies, asked their commander to be able to celebrate after weeks of rigorous training when they were not allowed to drink alcohol or leave the post.

"We were at Warrior Base in August of last year. When the commander said we could drink but not leave the post, my comrade made a comment to him that if that's the case, I don't need to drink at all," Collins said.
He said his commander pulled him aside and asked why his friend was talking about him like that.
"He asked a few more questions about my drinking habits, and then he suggested I go to a military substance abuse program," Collins said.

"I blew it off for a couple of weeks. I just didn't think I had a problem," Collins said. "I felt like my friends threw me under the bus."
Collins said that before he joined the Army in 2014, he didn't drink often, but when he did, he drank heavily. After some additional guidance from his senior leaders, he said he decided to enlist himself because he felt he had a problem.
"It was the best thing I've done since joining the Army," Collins said. "ASAP taught me about life choices and today I make much better choices."
Collins said with his ASAP training, he now realizes that he wasn't dependent on alcohol, but that he was abusing it. Her new lifestyle meant zero expenses and she said she had to make additional changes that were harder than enrolling herself.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (August 10, 2020) – Community Services recently celebrated its 55th year of serving Soldiers and their families. Apparently it's not finished growing yet.
At Fort Drum, ACS recently merged with the Substance Abuse Program to become the Soldier and Family Readiness Division (SFRD) under the Directorate of Human Resources.
Lorilyn Starr, chief of the Trooper and Family Readiness Division, said that while the name has changed, the services and programs that community members are familiar with are still available.
Training Opens Eyes To The Hidden
"Traditional services are not changing, and the level of care and support we show families will remain — and will be better," Starr said. “The ultimate goal is to provide the highest level of care and support to our community. We're really excited about this merger, and our new SFRD family has really gone above and beyond to make this transition as seamless as possible.
Starr said the merger allows for a more streamlined approach to providing care, noting that there was some overlap in services between the two organizations. A new departmental model will reduce redundancies and provide a more comprehensive level of support.
"The program is much more than alcohol and substance abuse prevention," Starr said. "Adding on ACS programming takes it to an even higher level. We needed to identify a department name that would give a true picture of all the programs we offer, and Soldier and Family Readiness is that name.
Starr said the merger consolidated programs from four buildings into two. ASAP remains at the same location, Bldg. at 10250 Fourth Armored Division Drive. Now called the Soldier and Family Readiness Center, the building houses the Suicide Prevention Program, Risk Reduction Program, Garrison Sharp (Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention), Family Advocacy Program, New Parent Support Program, Victim Advocacy Services and Exceptional Families.
